On the night of November the 3rd. 1943, Flight Lieutenant Bill Reid took his No. 61 Squadron Lancaster off to join a raid on Dusseldorf. En route the aircraft was attacked by an Me110, shattering the Lancaster's windshield, damaging the elevator and wounding Reid in the head. Despite his injury Reid carried on and was later attacked again , this time by a Focke Wulf 190. In this attack the navigator was killed, the wireless operator fatally injured, much damage was caused to the Lancaster and Reid was wounded again. Still Reid carried on to the target where the bomb-aimer was able to drop on target. Surviving heavy AA fire on the return journey Reid bought the battered Lancaster home, where one undercarriage leg collapsed on landing.
For his great courage and tenacity Bill Reid was awarded the Victoria Cross.
